Ark Conway Poetry Slam

Monday 25 January 2021

It's the start of the very first virtual Ark Conway Primary Poetry Slam! One week and counting until entries need to be in.

The Poetry Slam is an annual school-wide competition which aims to develop public speaking skills as well as encouraging pupils to engage with, and enjoy, a wide range of poetry.  We would love every pupil in school to choose a poem; either from the uploaded examples on their Teams page or one of their own choosing (it would be great to have as much variety as possible). We ask that pupils then make a concerted effort to learn the poem by heart and practise reading it aloud with intonation, expression and enthusiasm! Props and costumes will not be necessary; we are looking for the pupils who best captivate the audience using just the power of their words. Pupils will then be asked to upload a video of themselves performing their chosen poem (more details on where and how to do this will follow).

The competition timings will work as follows:

  • Monday 1st February: Children will be asked to perform, record and upload their pieces of poetry. Recordings must be uploaded by 4.00pm on Monday 1st February. One winner will be selected from each class (by the teacher and co-teacher) to go through to the final. Finalists will be announced during assembly on Friday 5th February.
  • Monday 8th February: Finalists will be asked to upload their poems for our panel of judges. This can be a new recording, but we would ask pupils to keep the poem the same.
  • Wednesday 10th February: The Poetry Slam final will take place virtually, using the uploaded videos, and the winner decided.
  • Friday 12th February: The winner of the Poetry Slam will be announced in assembly and we will ask them to do a special live performance. They will be awarded the grand prize of a £15 book voucher!
